DD Hammocks
DD Hammocks are probably the best known make of hammock UK wide and have a well deserved reputation for quality and value. They make a very good range of hammocks to suit different budgets and user requirements. Here we at Hammocks UK test out two market leading hammocks from DD Hammocks.
The sleeping solution - A hammock!
Light weight, strong, small pack size this simple model is the basic serious expedition tool in the range from DD hammocks, and consists of 2 layers of190T nylon that have a full length zip to enable you to insert a sleeping mat or self inflating camping mat for insulation and comfort, you can get some basic protection by sleeping between the layers.
The pack size of this market leader is only 24cm x 18cm x 6cm and the weight is just under 1 kilo including the stuff sack and 10 meters of webbing that make up the package. These easily portable hammocks are full size at 2.7m x 1.4m and will take a person up to 6'5" and 150kg! Dave our bushcraft guy bought a DD Hammocks camping model, and he fits that description and he was so pleased with his that he insisted we review them - when Dave insists we don't bother to argue!
Now the whole team have spent time outdoors sleeping in one of these and everyone agrees that for price, ease of rigging, comfort, strength and packability the Camping Hammock is unbeatable.
The DD Travel Hammock
The DD Hammocks travel can be used as a Bivi, a hammock that is a tent as well, no way Pedro, we were sceptical. Received wisdom says that it is necessary to have trees, vehicles, telegraph poles whatever to sling a hammock from, it's obvious!
DD Hammocks have solved this rather knotty problem with their Travel Hammock. The review team were impressed with thispiece of kit. It has a sturdy waterproof base that can sit directly on the ground, if necessary, and with a little ingenuity, some sticks or walking poles, the built on mosquito net can be erected to give protection from mosquitos or even the Scottish midge. The net is so fine that even tiny biting insects encountered in South American Jungles are kept at bay.
The fine mosquito/midge net integral in the design has a 2 way zipped entry on each side.
There are 2 waterproof base layers with a space between them for a sleeping mat or Thermorest for added comfort and insulation. There are velcro closures to keep the mat in place between the layers.
Big enough at 2700 cm X 1400cm for people up to 6' 5" and 24 stone even bushcraft guru Big Dave was happy with this hammock, especially when we weighed it at 1160g complete in its stuff sack with 10m of webbing and elastic.
We've tried this model over a wide variety of environments and been very impressed with the build quality and versatility of this hammock, as we are with all hammocks from this manufacturer, with its low weight and pack size we found it the ideal sleep solution on a canoe excursion down the River Severn during a warmer than usual October. The midges are usually an irritant that cause sleepless nights - not this time!
So there you have it, two well constructed and thoughtfully designed hammocks from DD Hammocks.
